Mixing thinset with too much water results in a watery, runny consistency that completely ruins the structural integrity, shrinkage rate, and adhesive performance of the mortar. When thinset is too wet, it loses its ability to hold up the weight of tiles, causing them to sag, slip out of alignment, or sink unevenly into the mortar bed. Furthermore, excessive water disrupts the delicate chemical crystal matrix during the curing phase, leading to a weak, chalky, and brittle mortar bed that lacks tensile strength. This can cause the tiles to hollow out, debond from the subfloor, and crack under minimal foot traffic, requiring the entire failed installation to be ripped out and redone.
