Making your own commercial-grade thinset mortar from scratch at home is generally not recommended because precise chemical ratios of Portland cement, graded silica sand, latex polymers, and water-retention agents are required to achieve proper bond strength and flexibility. However, in historic preservation or emergency masonry work, a basic site-mixed mortar can be created by combining one part Portland cement with three parts clean, fine mason sand, thoroughly blended with water or a liquid latex additive to improve adhesion. For standard tile installations, purchasing pre-blended bagged thinset from a home improvement store is safer, cheaper, and guarantees compliance with industry performance standards.
