You should never use thinset mortar as a substitute for tile grout because thinset is formulated strictly as an underlying structural adhesive rather than a decorative or protective joint filler. Thinset contains large aggregates like coarse sand and Portland cement that make it too rough, thick, and difficult to tool into narrow joint spaces, and it lacks the smooth finish and color pigmentation of true grout. More importantly, thinset does not possess the flexibility or sealant properties required to protect joints from dirt, stains, and moisture penetration over time. Using thinset in place of grout will result in an unsightly, abrasive, and rapidly deteriorating surface that fails to protect the tile edges.
