Depending on the specific scope of your project, the location, and the tile material, alternative bonding agents like pre-mixed organic mastic, epoxy mortar, or polyurethane construction adhesive can be used instead of thinset. Pre-mixed mastic is a sticky, convenient paste often used for small ceramic wall tiles and backsplashes in dry environments, but it must never be used on floors, large-format tiles, or wet areas like showers. Epoxy mortar offers incredible chemical resistance and extreme bonding strength for specialized industrial or commercial applications, though it is expensive and difficult to apply. For small crafts or minor emergency repairs, heavy-duty construction adhesive is sometimes substituted, but thinset remains unsurpassed for structural tile work.
