If you press the thermal reset button on a garbage disposal and it immediately pops back out, fails to click into place, or the disposal still refuses to run after clearing a confirmed physical jam, it typically signifies one of two major issues. Either the internal thermal switch has suffered permanent mechanical failure, or the motor windings have burned out completely due to an electrical short. In either scenario, the internal components cannot be economically repaired and the entire unit requires replacement.
