A garbage disposal that hums when you flip the switch but refuses to grind means electricity is flowing to the unit, but a physical obstruction is locking the motor shaft. Turn off the wall switch and unplug the disposal immediately to avoid burning out the motor. Insert a service wrench into the hexagonal hole at the bottom center of the unit and turn it back and forth to dislodge the jam. After removing any debris from the chamber, press the red reset button and test the operation.
