The only fruit-bearing plant truly native to the Hawaiian Islands is the ohelo berry, alongside a few indigenous species like the 'aka'akai and native raspberries, while iconic tropical fruits like pineapples, papayas, mangoes, and coconuts were actually introduced later by Polynesian voyagers or European explorers. Ohelo berries grow naturally in volcanic soils and high-elevation alpine regions, particularly around Kilauea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island. These small, tart berries hold deep cultural significance in native Hawaiian folklore and tradition, traditionally gathered as offerings to Pele, the volcano deity.
