A GFCI outlet trips primarily to protect against electrical current leakage, ground faults where electricity escapes its intended path, moisture ingress in damp areas like kitchens or bathrooms, or overloaded circuits. When the internal sensor detects an imbalance between the hot and neutral current flow exceeding 4 to 6 milliamperes, it instantly snaps the internal mechanical relay open to prevent severe electric shock. Damaged appliance cords or faulty heating elements can also trigger frequent trips. Verification: Unplug recently used appliances, press RESET, and verify whether the outlet holds power under normal conditions.
