A GFCI outlet that refuses to stay in the RESET position is typically caused by an active ground fault downstream, reverse line/load wiring, or an internal mechanical failure. First, unplug all devices connected to that circuit and any downstream receptacles. Turn off the main circuit breaker for 10 seconds, restore power, and try pressing RESET again. If it still pops back out, shut off the breaker, pull the outlet out of the wall box, and verify that incoming wires are connected to the LINE terminals rather than the LOAD terminals. If wiring is correct and it still fails, the internal surge components are dead. Verification: Test with a multimeter across the line terminals; if voltage is present but the unit will not latch, replace the GFCI receptacle entirely.
