Investment casting, or lost-wax casting, offers significant advantages, including exceptional dimensional accuracy, superb surface finishes, and the ability to produce highly complex, intricate near-net shapes that would be impossible or cost-prohibitive to machine from solid blocks. It accommodates a vast array of difficult-to-machine alloys and reduces the need for secondary operations. However, the primary disadvantages include high production costs due to labor-intensive mold preparation, expensive tooling dies, lengthy lead times for multi-step processing, and limitations regarding the physical size and weight of parts that can be successfully cast.
