The first signs of cockroaches are often subtle and easy to miss because roaches are nocturnal and hide in dark secluded places during day, so early detection requires looking for droppings, egg cases, and activity at night, with German cockroaches and American cockroaches showing similar early signs. The most common first sign is droppings that look like black pepper or coffee grounds, small dark specks found in cabinets, drawers, under sinks, behind refrigerators, and along baseboards, with German cockroach droppings being very small and American cockroach droppings larger. Another early sign is a musty or oily odor in cabinets or areas where roaches hide, caused by pheromones. You may also find egg cases called oothecae, which are brown purse-shaped capsules about 8 millimeters long containing up to 40 eggs, often in cracks and near hiding spots. Shed skins and smear marks that look like dark streaks on walls are also signs. Live activity includes seeing a roach at night when you turn on kitchen light, especially in kitchen or bathroom, with German cockroaches being small light brown about half an inch with two dark stripes, and seeing one during day often indicates larger hidden population because they normally avoid light. You may notice roaches in cardboard boxes or grocery bags. For early detection, inspect under sinks, behind appliances, and inside cabinets with flashlight at night, place sticky traps, and if you find signs, implement sanitation by storing food sealed and cleaning crumbs, sealing cracks with caulk, and using gel baits containing fipronil to prevent small problem becoming heavy infestation costing $300 to $800.
