How many roaches there are if you see one depends on species, location, time of day, and signs of infestation, but generally seeing one cockroach especially during day or German cockroach in kitchen indicates many more hidden, as roaches are social and nocturnal insects that hide in colonies. If you see one American cockroach, which is large reddish brown about 1.5 inches often called palmetto bug, near drains, basement, or exterior at night, it may be an isolated adult that wandered in from outdoors through gaps seeking moisture, and there may be only a few, though you should still inspect and seal entry points. However, if you see one German cockroach, which is small light brown about 1/2 inch with two dark stripes, in kitchen or bathroom, especially during day, it often indicates a larger infestation with dozens to hundreds hidden because German cockroaches are indoor breeders that reproduce quickly, with one female producing up to 300 offspring, and they hide in cracks, under appliances, and wall voids, so daytime sightings mean overcrowding and many more hidden. Research suggests for every one roach seen, there may be 10 to 20 more hidden, and in severe infestations hundreds. Signs of larger population include droppings that look like black pepper, egg cases, shed skins, musty odor, and seeing nymphs. To assess, inspect under sinks, behind fridge, inside cabinets at night with flashlight, and place sticky traps. Early action with sanitation, sealing cracks, gel baits containing fipronil, and professional inspection costing $100 to $200 is recommended because early intervention prevents larger infestation requiring $500 plus treatment.
