No, finding a cockroach does not mean your house is dirty, as cockroaches can invade even the cleanest, well-maintained homes seeking moisture, warmth, and shelter, though poor sanitation can make infestations more likely and severe. German cockroaches, which are small light brown roaches about half an inch common in kitchens, and American cockroaches, large reddish brown about one and a half inches often called palmetto bugs, can enter spotless homes through cracks as small as 1/16 inch around windows, doors, pipes, and foundations, through drains and sewer lines, and by hitchhiking in grocery bags, cardboard boxes, used appliances, and luggage, regardless of cleanliness. They are attracted to moisture from leaky pipes, condensation, and pet water bowls, plus warmth from appliances like refrigerators, so even clean homes with moisture problems can have roaches. Additionally, roaches can migrate from neighboring apartments or houses through wall voids, so apartment dwellers may get roaches from neighbors despite keeping clean. Pest control professionals report roaches in luxury homes, hotels, hospitals, and restaurants that are cleaned daily, demonstrating cleanliness alone does not prevent them. While dirty conditions with crumbs, grease, and clutter provide more food and hiding spots supporting larger populations, clean homes can still have roaches but usually have smaller infestations that are easier to control. So finding a roach should not cause embarrassment or imply dirtiness, but you should still practice integrated pest management including storing food sealed, cleaning crumbs, fixing leaks, sealing cracks with caulk, and using gel baits containing fipronil, plus professional inspection if needed, because even cleanest houses need prevention.
