Keeping AC on can help deter roaches to some extent because cockroaches prefer warm, humid environments around 75 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit and high humidity, and air conditioning lowers temperature and humidity making conditions less ideal, but AC alone does not keep roaches away or eliminate infestations and should not be relied on as primary control. German cockroaches, which are small light brown roaches common in kitchens and bathrooms, thrive in warm humid areas near sinks, dishwashers, and appliances, and they reproduce faster in heat, so keeping home cooler around 68 to 72 degrees and humidity below 50 percent can slow reproduction and make environment less attractive, plus AC reduces moisture that roaches need for water. American cockroaches which are large reddish brown also prefer warm basements and drains. However, roaches are highly adaptable and can survive in cooler homes by hiding in warm spots like behind refrigerators, inside appliances, and in wall voids near hot water pipes, and they will still seek food crumbs even in air-conditioned homes. AC does not remove food sources, seal entry points, or kill colonies that may contain hundreds hidden. Effective roach control requires integrated pest management including thorough sanitation by storing food sealed and cleaning crumbs daily, fixing leaks, sealing cracks with caulk, reducing clutter, and using gel baits containing fipronil or hydramethylnon placed under sinks and behind appliances that roaches eat and carry back to kill colony within days to weeks. So AC helps make home less hospitable but does not keep roaches away alone.
