Mohawk Indians were both peaceful and warlike, known as Keepers of Eastern Door of Haudenosaunee Confederacy which was founded around 1142 to bring peace among Iroquois nations, but also fierce warriors defending territory, so they had both peace and warfare traditions. Mohawks were part of Haudenosaunee or Iroquois Confederacy which was confederacy of Five then Six Nations created to end inter-tribal warfare and promote peace through longhouse council and Great Law of Peace, so Mohawks were peacemakers within Confederacy, living in longhouses, farming, with matrilineal clan system and diplomacy. However, Mohawks were also known as most warlike of Iroquois due to location at eastern door facing enemies, engaging in Beaver Wars 1600s to control fur trade, fighting French and other tribes, and allying with British in American Revolution under Joseph Brant, seen as aggressive by settlers but defending lands. So were Mohawks peaceful? They had peace tradition through Confederacy bringing internal peace, but were fierce warriors externally defending Eastern Door, with both peaceful farming and diplomatic roles and warrior roles, not solely peaceful or warlike but complex Nation with both aspects, similar to other nations with both peace and war traditions.
