The name Lennox is considered relatively uncommon but has become increasingly popular in recent years, so it is not extremely rare but still distinctive. As a baby name, Lennox originated as a Scottish surname derived from a place name in Scotland meaning elm grove or from the Lennox district in Scotland, and it transitioned to a first name in the 2000s as part of the trend of using surnames as first names. In the United States, Lennox for boys ranked around 300 to 400 in popularity in 2023 and 2024 according to Social Security Administration data, meaning about 800 to 1,000 baby boys named Lennox per year out of millions, so it is not in the top 100 but is known. For girls, Lennox is also used as a unisex name but is less common, ranking around 600 to 800. As a surname, Lennox is more common in Scotland and among people of Scottish descent but still not extremely common. As an HVAC company name, Lennox is well known as Lennox International founded in 1895. So as a first name, Lennox is uncommon enough to be distinctive and not overly used, but not so rare that people have never heard it, striking a balance between unique and recognizable, making it appealing for parents seeking a modern Scottish name.
