Slipping the clutch—meaning engaging the friction disc gradually while balancing engine throttle—is an absolute necessity every time you launch a manual transmission vehicle from a complete stop or transition between gears smoothly. However, intentionally prolonging that slippage or developing habits like resting your foot on the clutch pedal or slipping the clutch excessively to hold a car on an incline on a hill creates destructive friction. Excessive, unnecessary slipping generates intense localized heat that rapidly scorches the friction material, glazes the flywheel, boils hydraulic fluid, and accelerates wear on the pressure plate fingers and throwout bearing.
