Fixing a leaking threaded pipe joint without completely disassembling or removing the pipe is extremely difficult because proper thread sealants and tape must be applied directly to the mating threads. However, if the joint is slightly loose, gently tightening the fitting a quarter to a half turn with a wrench can sometimes compress the existing seal enough to stop a minor drip. Alternatively, applying an external waterproof emergency repair product like self-fusing silicone tape or waterproof epoxy putty directly over the exterior of the joint can provide a temporary band-aid. For a permanent fix, the joint must eventually be unthreaded, cleaned, properly sealed, and reassembled.
