While duct tape is famously versatile for a wide variety of household quick fixes, using it to stop an active water leak on a pressurized pipe is generally an ineffective and unreliable temporary solution. Standard cloth duct tapes feature an adhesive backing that quickly breaks down, loses its stickiness, and turns into a gummy mess when exposed to constant moisture, water pressure, and temperature fluctuations. The persistent force of pressurized water will instantly cause duct tape to bubble, lift, and blow out, resulting in renewed leaking. For emergency temporary patches, self-fusing silicone tape or rubber repair wraps designed specifically for wet environments should be used instead.
