How many air movers you need depends on whether you are drying water damage, drying carpets, or just ventilating, but there are standard formulas for water damage. For general ventilation or cooling, one air mover is usually enough for a room up to 400 square feet because they move so much air. For water damage restoration, professionals follow IICRC guidelines which recommend one air mover per 150 to 300 square feet of affected floor area, plus one air mover for every 10 to 15 linear feet of wet wall. For example, a small 10 by 12 foot bedroom with wet carpet needs one air mover, a 20 by 20 foot living room needs two air movers, and a 600 square foot flooded basement needs three to four air movers. If walls are also wet, you need additional units angled at 45 degrees to dry walls and floors simultaneously. For heavy saturation like soaked hardwood, plaster, or Class 3 water that wicked up walls, you may need one per 50 to 100 square feet for fastest drying. You must also consider electrical circuits, as each air mover draws 2 to 10 amps, so you cannot plug more than 3 to 4 large units into one 15 amp household circuit. For carpet cleaning, one air mover per 200 square feet speeds drying significantly. It is better to have slightly more airflow than too little, as inadequate airflow extends drying time and increases mold risk.
