Does fully comprehensive car insurance cover engine failure in Australia, generally no, because engine failure due to mechanical breakdown, wear and tear, lack of maintenance or manufacturing defect is excluded under all comprehensive policies. Fully comprehensive covers accidental damage, theft, fire, vandalism, storm and hail, not mechanical breakdown. For example, if engine seizes due to oil leak, overheating, timing belt failure or old age, insurance will not pay for repair which can cost $3,000 to $10,000. However, there are exceptions where engine failure is covered as result of insured event. If engine damaged due to accident, like collision damaging engine block, it is covered as part of accident repair. If engine damaged due to flood water ingestion after driving through flood unintentionally, some policies cover it under flood, but many exclude if you deliberately drove into flood. If engine damaged due to fire, it is covered. If engine damaged due to theft, covered. Some insurers offer optional mechanical breakdown insurance or extended warranty as add-on for cars under 10 years and 150,000km, costing $300 to $600 per year, which covers engine, transmission and electrical failures. Roadside assistance may cover towing if engine fails, but not repair. So standard fully comp does not cover engine failure from wear, you need mechanical breakdown cover or manufacturer warranty, and regular servicing is required to keep warranty.
