Do you need both collision and comprehensive car insurance in Australia, terminology is different from US, in Australia comprehensive already includes collision, so you do not need both separately. In US, collision covers your car damage from collision, comprehensive covers theft, fire, vandalism and weather, and you buy both for full cover. In Australia, comprehensive car insurance includes both collision and comprehensive in US terms, meaning it covers accidental damage to your own car from collision with another car or object, plus theft, fire, vandalism, storm, hail and flood, plus liability for damage to others up to $20M. So you only need comprehensive in Australia for full cover. If you want lower cover, you can buy Third Party Property Damage which covers only damage you cause to others, not your own car, or Third Party Fire and Theft which covers damage to others plus your car for fire and theft only, but not collision to your car. So if your car is worth over $10K, you need comprehensive, which already includes collision. If car is worth under $5K, you may only need Third Party Property Damage. There is no separate collision policy in Australia, it is part of comprehensive. So you do not need both, you need comprehensive for full protection, or third party for budget. If you are from US moving to Australia, think of Australian comprehensive as US collision plus comprehensive plus liability combined.
