A ductless mini-split air conditioning system can certainly lose its refrigerant charge over time, but it never naturally "runs out" or consumes gas during normal operation because cooling loops operate as closed, hermetically sealed circuits. If a mini-split is low on refrigerant, it is definitive proof that a physical breach, pinhole crack, or loose mechanical flare connection exists somewhere in the copper tubing lines or coils, allowing pressurized gas to escape into the atmosphere. Simply recharging the system without locating and brazing or tightening the underlying leak will only provide temporary relief. You can troubleshoot by observing cooling drop-offs and frozen coils. You can verify that a leak is present when professional manifold gauge pressure testing confirms a low charge requiring precise leak repair and weighing in fresh gas.
