SoFi Technologies (SOFI) reported a record-breaking second quarter on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, with revenue, member growth, and loan originations all hitting all-time highs. Despite beating analyst expectations on both the top and bottom lines, the fintech's stock fell more than 9% in trading, as investors focused on the company's decision to maintain its full-year profit guidance while significantly raising its revenue outlook .
Record-Breaking Quarter Overshadowed by Spending Concerns
A Quarter of Historic Growth
The company reported adjusted net revenue of $1.21 billion, a 40% increase year-over-year, exceeding the $1.12 billion analysts had projected . Adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.12, beating estimates of $0.11 . Total loan originations surged 69% from a year ago to a record $14.8 billion, and member growth hit a record 15.8 million after adding 1.1 million new members in the quarter . The company's lending segment revenue jumped 63% year-over-year to $724.8 million, while financial services revenue rose 29% to $466.3 million .
CEO Anthony Noto called the results "nothing short of an exceptional quarter" and described 2026 as a "defining year" for the company .
Why the Stock Fell
Despite the strong operational performance, SoFi's stock dropped nearly 10%, extending a 36% decline year-to-date . The sell-off was driven primarily by the company's updated guidance: while management raised its full-year adjusted revenue forecast to $4.75 billion to $4.85 billion, it left adjusted EBITDA, net income, and earnings per share guidance unchanged at approximately $1.6 billion, $825 million, and $0.60 per share respectively .
This disconnect signals that most of the incremental revenue will be reinvested into growth initiatives rather than flowing directly to profitability. CFO Chris Lapointe explained the decision, stating, "There are just too many large attractive growth areas for us to invest versus adding even more profitability"Â .
Uneven Segment Performance
The market reaction was also influenced by weakness in SoFi's technology platform segment, which saw revenue drop 23% year-over-year to $84.5 million following the departure of a major client . While the financial services segment grew 29%, its contribution margin fell 600 basis points to 46% as expenses grew faster than revenue . Sales and marketing spending rose 48% year-over-year to $392.4 million, further fueling concerns about the company's margin trajectory .
Analyst and Market Perspective
Analysts noted that investors are now demanding clearer evidence of operating leverage rather than simply rewarding growth. The TD Cowen team said the earnings beat was "tempered by the fact that the company maintained full-year EPS guidance" . Morningstar, however, disagreed with the market reaction, raising its fair value estimate for SoFi to $17.50 per share and suggesting the stock is modestly undervalued .
CEO Noto remained confident in the long-term strategy, stating, "Why are you putting loans on the balance sheet? It's because we want to make sure we have revenue in the future that's visible, that can deliver no matter what. It's 100% in our control" . He also noted the company's expectation of one to two interest rate hikes in 2026, compared to earlier expectations of rate cuts, which has made the company more conservative in its profit guidance .
