Nancy Guthrie Case : Release of Ransom Notes Marks Six Months Since Disappearance

The Pima County Sheriff's Department has publicly released the full contents of two ransom notes linked to the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of "Today" show co-host Savannah Guthrie . The release comes as investigators mark six months since Guthrie vanished from her home in the Catalina Foothills near Tucson, Arizona, on January 31 .

The notes were initially sent to Tucson television station KOLD in the days following her disappearance and were later turned over to authorities . Investigators consider the notes to be legitimate and hope that releasing them will help identify the writer through "distinctive linguistic characteristics" . "A friend, family member, coworker, classmate, or acquaintance may recognize these patterns of expression and possess information that could help identify the individual responsible," the sheriff's office stated .

Demands, Deadlines, and a Grim Claim

The first ransom note, received on Monday, February 2, was addressed directly to Savannah Guthrie . It stated that Nancy Guthrie was "safe but scared" and demanded $4 million in bitcoin . The note threatened to increase the ransom to $6 million if the initial deadline was missed and warned that she would be killed if payment was not received by a final deadline of Monday, February 9 .

"You will not be able to contact me from here on out, there will be no negotiation. Do not play games, law enforcement will not be able to help you," the note warned . It also included details meant to authenticate the message, such as a reference to Guthrie's white smartwatch being left on the floor and a destroyed backyard floodlight .

A second note arrived on February 6, addressed to the "Guthrie Family" . This message delivered a far more devastating conclusion, claiming that Nancy Guthrie had died shortly after being taken . "We did not fully grasp the seriousness of her physical condition. She perished shortly after she was taken. We believe it was heart related. She is buried in nature now," the note read . It concluded with an apology and a statement that "nothing you could have done could have changed the outcome" .

Savannah Guthrie's Emotional Plea

Savannah Guthrie has been vocal throughout the investigation, repeatedly pleading for her mother's safe return. In the days following the receipt of the notes, she posted a video on Instagram responding to the demands. "We received your message and we understand," she said. "We beg you now to return our mother to us... This is very valuable to us, and we will pay" .

On Saturday, following the public release of the notes, Guthrie expressed the family's ongoing anguish in a heartbreaking social media post. "We have lived every moment, every breath, and every heartbeat in agony and despair," she wrote . "Every day, we wake up and try to be strong and go on - because that's what our joyful and resilient Mom taught us to do. But make no mistake - our hearts are in ruins" . She added that the family is determined to "find out what happened to her, so that we can give her the dignity of a proper goodbye" .

Investigation Remains Active with Significant Challenges

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has described the investigation as "very active," emphasizing that authorities continue to review tens of thousands of tips, videos, and forensic leads . However, they have faced significant challenges. Nanos recently revealed that DNA tests on a hair sample found in Guthrie's home have come back inconclusive, and a mixed DNA sample from the scene contains up to four people . Labs across the country are working to isolate the contributors, but it remains uncertain if that will be possible .

The investigation has also been marked by tension. Sheriff Nanos disputed claims by FBI Director Kash Patel that the FBI was initially kept out of the investigation, which Patel suggested may have resulted in the loss of crucial video evidence . A man detained for questioning in February has also filed a notice of claim against Nanos and a detective, seeking $2.5 million over alleged damage to his reputation .

A reward totaling more than $1.2 million, including $1 million from the Guthrie family and $100,000 from the FBI, is being offered for information leading to answers in the case .
