PGA Tour player Trey Mullinax has been suspended for six months after testing positive for a substance banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The 34-year-old, who has only conditional status for 2026, admitted he took a medication to treat a long-standing condition without seeking the required approval .

The Announcement and Admission

The PGA Tour announced the suspension on Wednesday, July 29, confirming that Mullinax had violated its anti-doping policy . In a statement released through the Tour, Mullinax acknowledged his "lack of knowledge" was not an excuse and took full responsibility for the violation .

"I have never taken any substance with the intention of gaining a competitive advantage," Mullinax said in the statement . "Anyone who knows me knows how much I respect this game and the values it represents. I accept the consequences of my actions and will use this experience as a lesson ."

The suspension is effective immediately, making Mullinax eligible to return to competition on January 16, 2027 . The date falls one week before the official start of the 2027 PGA Tour season .

A Rare Penalty

Mullinax is believed to be only the ninth player to be suspended since the PGA Tour began its anti-doping program in 2008 . He is the first since Byeong Hun An was suspended in October 2023 for using a cough syrup sold over the counter in South Korea that contained a banned substance .

Mullinax's Career and Recent Struggles

Mullinax has faced significant challenges in recent years. The 2022 Barbasol Classic winner has been battling hip injuries for the past three seasons . He made 23 starts in 2025 but finished 150th in the FedEx Cup standings, well outside the top 125 needed to retain his full PGA Tour card .

In 2026, he has played only three times, including one start on the Korn Ferry Tour. His last PGA Tour appearance was at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in late April . With the suspension, his path back to the Tour will become even more difficult .
