Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has offered a striking forecast for the job market, predicting that the artificial intelligence revolution will create a wave of high-paying opportunities not in Silicon Valley offices but on construction sites. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, alongside BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, Huang described the current tech buildout as the "largest infrastructure build-out in human history."
"It's wonderful that the jobs are related to tradecraft, and we're going to have plumbers and electricians and construction and steelworkers," Huang said. He emphasized that many of these roles will pay over $100,000 annually without requiring a college degree. "Everybody should be able to make a great living," he stated. "You don't need to have a PhD in computer science to do so."
The scale of investment driving this demand is staggering. Technology companies are expected to pour $7 trillion into global data center infrastructure by the end of the decade. This spending is already creating measurable employment effects across the United States and beyond.
The Construction Workforce Surge
The data center boom has become a significant driver of construction employment. The United States had 2,788 data centers either under construction or announced as of December 2025, according to a report by the American Edge Project and Technology Councils of North America. These projects are expected to create 5.4 million temporary and permanent jobs across the country.
Job website Indeed found that data center job postings more than doubled in the past two years, even as total U.S. job postings fell by 12%. Construction employment rose in 33 states and the District of Columbia in the 12 months ending June 2026, according to the Associated General Contractors of America. Large data center projects can employ between 1,500 and 3,000 workers during peak construction phases, according to Berkeley Research Group.
The Electrician Bottleneck
Among all trades, electricians are experiencing the most intense demand. Dan Mattingly, vice president of staffing provider NCW, told Staffing Industry Analysts that electricians are the "No. 1 demand at data center sites," followed by workers skilled in mechanical roles. The shift to liquid cooling systems has further increased pressure on mechanical trades.
This demand is driving significant wage growth. Mattingly reported that certain job categories are seeing a 20% run-up in wages annually due to supply-side economics exacerbated by the scale and velocity of construction. Journeyman electricians working on data center projects in Maryland have reported earning $59.50 per hour, a substantial increase from typical residential and commercial rates.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects electrician employment will grow by 9% over the next decade, but industry leaders warn this pace will not be sufficient. BlackRock CEO Larry Fink has been particularly vocal about the electrical industry as a looming bottleneck. "I've even told members of the Trump team that we're going to run out of electricians that we need to build out AI data centers," Fink said at the CERAWeek energy conference in Houston. "We just don't have enough."
Industry Response and Training Initiatives
Major technology companies are responding to the labor shortage through substantial investments in training programs. Meta recently announced America's Workforce Academy, a nationwide initiative offering free training in skilled trades with a guaranteed job upon graduation. Powered by an initial $115 million first-year investment, the program will launch in Louisiana, Ohio, Indiana, and Texas.
Google has committed $10 million in 2025 to electrical worker organizations such as the IBEW, the Electrical Training Alliance, and the National Electrical Contractors Association. The company estimates its investment could increase the electrical worker talent pipeline by 70% by the end of the decade. Microsoft has expanded its partnership with North America's Building Trades Unions to provide skilled trades workers with free AI literacy training and credentialing opportunities.
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers has seen membership nearly double at some locals due to data center construction. IBEW Local 163 in Pennsylvania experienced its membership almost double since construction began on a new Amazon Web Services data center campus in Salem Township. Jillian Henderson, the local's business manager, estimated that 75% to 80% of Local 163's members are currently working on the AWS project.
The Global Dimension
The data center employment boom extends well beyond the United States. India's data center market is projected to grow from $5.55 billion in 2025 to $13.11 billion by 2034, a 136% expansion. The country's installed data center capacity is expected to rise from approximately 1.5 gigawatts to 6.5 gigawatts by 2030, with cumulative investment commitments exceeding $126 billion.
India's industry already employs approximately 86,000 to 90,000 people, but a significant skills gap persists. A Quess Corp report's Supply Sufficiency Index for AI operations reads 47, indicating a serious shortage of trained workers. By NLB Services' count, only 15% to 20% of applicants currently clear the minimum bar for modern data center roles.
Concerns About Workforce Readiness
Despite the optimism, industry leaders warn that the skills gap threatens to derail the infrastructure buildout. Turner & Townsend's 2026 Global Construction Market Intelligence report found data centers to be the most capacity-constrained construction sector globally, with 87% of markets reporting shortages in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing trades.
Ford CEO Jim Farley has cautioned that AI is hollowing out traditional white-collar entry points while the country lacks the blue-collar workforce needed for a manufacturing and infrastructure revival. "How can we reshore all this stuff if we don't have people to work there?" Farley asked. He noted the U.S. was already short 600,000 factory workers and 500,000 construction workers.
Martin Schager, executive director of strategic operations at Aerotek, emphasized that workforce availability is the industry's greatest constraint. "The future of data center growth will not be determined solely by access to capital, land or power," Schager said. "It will increasingly be defined by workforce availability." He noted that organizations that can attract, develop, and retain skilled talent across the entire data center lifecycle will be the ones that ultimately succeed in the AI economy.
Ethical Considerations Among Workers
The rapid data center buildout has sparked ethical debates among tradespeople. While many electricians view data center work as a career opportunity, others have expressed concerns about the broader societal impact.
Some electricians active in online communities have questioned whether the AI boom represents a positive development. One electrician based in the Midwest told WIRED that he no longer tells people what he does for a living. He recalled instances where people criticized him for "contributing to something like that."
Another electrician named Ryan said he would find it "really tough to want to take that job call" and would refuse work on data centers, comparing them to other jobs he deems unethical, like those at private prisons. "If AI were destined for benevolent use, things would be different," he told WIRED.
However, others argue that the forces behind the data center buildout are much bigger than any individual worker. One electrician noted that "we're almost always working for the worst possible people in the end, but we all need a paycheck because of the unlivable world that those same rich people have created for us."
