A nonprofit coalition has reached a significant $2 million milestone in its ambitious effort to purchase the Hampshire College campus and transform it into a vibrant "educational village." Hampshire Next, a grassroots organization comprised of alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents, and community members, announced the achievement on Tuesday, August 5, 2026, demonstrating what organizers call a powerful show of community support. The coalition now stands as a serious contender in the race to determine the future of the 800-acre property in Amherst and Hadley, as the college prepares to close its doors at the end of the year.

The Race for the Campus

Hampshire Next is not alone in its pursuit of the property. The coalition is one of three groups that have publicly proposed acquiring the 800-acre campus. A second proposal comes from a Maryland-based philosopher who also envisions reusing the campus as an educational institution. A third proposal, put forward by The Trustees of Reservations and Kestrel Land Trust, focuses on preserving the open space for conservation. This competitive landscape underscores the high stakes and varied interests surrounding the future of the iconic Hampshire College site.

College's Final Semester and Financial Status

The college, which announced its impending closure in mid-April, is currently operating through a final fall semester teach-out with a streamlined student body of approximately 175 students and a reduced faculty. This semester is set to conclude with a final commencement ceremony scheduled for December 18, 2026.

To finance these operations and ensure an orderly wind-down, Hampshire College has secured a loan from a philanthropic lender. In a letter to the campus community, President Jennifer Chrisler confirmed that the college is confident it has adequate resources to support the teach-out. The college has also obtained necessary insurance for the campus. Chrisler noted that the college will continue to pursue successful land sales to fulfill its financial obligations and facilitate the orderly transition.
