A standard four-inch thick concrete slab or footer is generally inadequate and unsafe to support the structural weight of a multi-story residential home. Standard foundation footings require much greater thickness—typically eight to twelve inches or more, reinforced with heavy steel rebar—to safely distribute heavy loads across the underlying soil without cracking or failing.
