Whether pier and beam is cheaper than a concrete slab depends heavily on site conditions. On perfectly flat, stable terrain, a standard monolithic concrete slab is typically cheaper and faster upfront. However, on steep slopes, rolling hills, rocky land, or highly expansive clay soils, a pier and beam foundation can ultimately become much more cost-effective because it minimizes massive and expensive earth-moving excavations.
