Discovering a puddle of standing water pooled in the bottom of your residential refrigerator directly beneath the crisper vegetable drawers is the classic symptom of a clogged or frozen defrost drain. During automated defrost cycles, melted frost from the evaporator coils flows down through the interior drain hole into the bottom evaporation pan. When food crumbs, seed particles, or slime clog this opening, or when ice seals it shut, the melting water backs up, overflows the internal drain trough, and pools at the bottom of the fresh food compartment under your drawers. You can troubleshoot by inspecting the back interior wall for ice. You can verify that your corrective action is successful when clearing the drain hole with warm water and a pipe cleaner eliminates pooling water.
