Nintendo has never included Kirby in the core Mario Kart roster primarily because the franchise focuses specifically on characters originating from the Super Mario universe and its direct spin-offs. While other major Nintendo intellectual properties like The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing eventually made guest appearances in later versions like Mario Kart 8, Kirby has historically maintained his own separate racing and spin-off game series, such as Kirby's Air Ride, keeping his crossover appearances reserved for fighting games like Super Smash Bros.
