Kirby came first chronologically in the video game industry. The original Kirby's Dream Land was released for the handheld Game Boy console by HAL Laboratory and Nintendo in 1992, created by game designer Masahiro Sakurai. In contrast, the Pokémon franchise—developed by Game Freak—did not make its official debut until the release of Pokémon Red and Green in Japan in 1996. Therefore, the pink puffball predates the massive pocket monster phenomenon by four full years.
