It is hard to cancel ADT because the company's business model is intentionally built around long-term contracts and retention procedures. Most traditional ADT installations come with a 36-month monitoring agreement, and that contract often includes an auto-renewal clause. If you try to cancel before the term ends, you are hit with an early termination fee that can be 75% to 90% of the remaining contract value, which can be hundreds or thousands of dollars. Even after the contract ends, cancellation is not as simple as clicking a button online. ADT requires you to call their dedicated cancellation line, which is separate from general support, and you must often provide written notice or speak to a retention specialist whose job is to offer discounts, free equipment upgrades, or lower monthly rates to keep you. Customers frequently report long hold times, being transferred multiple times, and being told they need to send certified mail or provide proof of moving or death. Authorized dealer contracts add another layer of complexity because the dealer and ADT corporate may blame each other. This friction is designed to reduce churn and is a common reason for complaints to state attorneys general.
