ADT Security is a publicly traded company, trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker ADT, so it is owned by its shareholders, but it has major institutional owners with significant influence. Historically, ADT was owned by Tyco International after a merger in the 1990s, then spun off as The ADT Corporation in 2012. In 2016, it was taken private again in a $6.9 billion acquisition led by private equity giant Apollo Global Management. ADT went public again in January 2018. Today, Apollo Global Management remains the largest shareholder, owning roughly 50-55% of the company's stock through affiliated funds, giving it controlling interest. The second most notable large stakeholder is State Farm, which invested $1.2 billion in ADT in 2022 as part of a strategic partnership to offer smart home security to State Farm customers. Google also invested $450 million in 2020 for a 6.6% stake to integrate Nest devices with ADT's platform. So while it is public, Apollo effectively controls ADT Security now.
