A water heater pilot light repeatedly keeps going out due to a faulty, soot-covered, or misaligned thermocouple, strong drafts in the utility room, or inadequate combustion air supply. If the pilot flame does not make direct, steady contact with the thermocouple tip, it cannot generate the necessary millivolt electrical current required to keep the internal safety gas valve open. Additionally, drafts can blow the tiny pilot flame sideways away from the sensor. Verification: Clean the thermocouple tip with fine sandpaper and check for utility room drafts.
