To clean a soot-covered thermocouple, first turn the gas control valve completely to the "OFF" position and allow the burner assembly to cool down entirely to prevent burns. Remove the outer lower combustion chamber access cover to expose the pilot burner assembly. Gently scrub the metal tip of the thermocouple using fine-grit sandpaper, emery cloth, or a clean steel wool pad to strip away accumulated carbon soot, oxidation, and mineral film until bare shiny metal is visible. Verification: Re-ignite the pilot light and check that the flame stays lit steadily after releasing the control button.
