Eastern Michigan University officially decided to change its historic nickname and mascot from the Hurons to the Eagles due to growing concerns regarding cultural sensitivity, inclusivity, and the inappropriate use of indigenous names and imagery in sports. Prompted by recommendations from the Michigan Civil Rights Commission and advocacy groups who argued that utilizing native peoples as cartoonish or generalized athletic mascots perpetuates harmful stereotypes, the university voted to retire the moniker. Transitioning to the Eagles allowed the institution to foster a more welcoming, respectful, and modern campus environment for all students.
