Prior to adopting the soaring Eagles moniker that represents its modern athletic programs, Eastern Michigan University was famously known for decades as the Hurons. The historical name and imagery were originally chosen during a campus-wide student contest in the early twentieth century to honor indigenous heritage. In the late 1980s, following evolving cultural awareness and respectful consultations, the university officially retired the Hurons nickname and transitioned to the Eagles mascot.
