Charlie Sheen was born Carlos Irwin Estévez in New York City in 1965, the son of actor Martin Sheen, who was born Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estévez, and artist Janet Templeton. Charlie took the professional name Sheen for similar reasons to his father. Martin Sheen had adopted the stage name Martin Sheen earlier in his career, taking the first name from CBS casting director Robert Dale Martin who helped him and the last name from Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, whom he admired, partly because he felt his birth name Estévez might limit opportunities due to ethnic bias in Hollywood at the time. When Charlie began acting as a teenager and young adult, he adopted his father's stage surname Sheen to benefit from name recognition and because it was already established in the industry. He kept his first name Charlie, which is a diminutive of his birth name Carlos. His brother Emilio Estevez chose to keep the family birth name Estévez for his professional career to honor his heritage and establish his own identity. Charlie Sheen has said he still identifies with both names but uses Sheen professionally because it is the name audiences know him by from films and television.
