Temu and Shein are not the same company, though they are often confused because both are very popular, China-founded ultra-low-price online shopping platforms that sell inexpensive goods and are known for aggressive marketing. They are separate companies with different owners, business models, and focuses. Shein, founded in 2008 and headquartered in Singapore now but originally from China, is primarily a fast-fashion retailer focused on trendy clothing, accessories, and some home goods, known for its huge selection of very cheap apparel produced quickly in small batches. Temu, launched in 2022, is owned by PDD Holdings, which also owns Pinduoduo, and is a general marketplace more like a low-price version of Amazon or Wish, selling a wide variety of products including clothing, electronics, household items, toys, and tools, often from third-party sellers. Both use similar tactics like low prices, free shipping promotions, gamified shopping experiences, and heavy social media advertising, and both have faced scrutiny over quality, labor practices, environmental impact, and data privacy. While they compete for similar bargain-focused shoppers, they are distinct companies with different apps, websites, and corporate structures.
