GE refrigerators are now made by GE Appliances, a Haier company, which is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky and owned by Chinese appliance giant Haier since 2016, when Haier acquired GE Appliances from General Electric for 5.4 billion dollars. General Electric Company, the original maker, sold its appliance division but allowed use of GE brand under license. Today, GE Appliances designs and manufactures many refrigerators in the United States at plants in Decatur, Alabama for top-freezer and side-by-side models like GTE18GMHES and GSS25GSHSS, and in Selmer, Tennessee for other models, employing about 12,000 workers in US. Some GE refrigerator models and components like compressors and electronics are sourced globally from Mexico, China, and South Korea. GE Appliances also owns brands GE Profile, GE Cafe, Haier, and Hotpoint, all made in same factories with shared engineering. Despite ownership by Haier, GE Appliances operates independently with US engineering and service network, offering 1-year full warranty and 5-year sealed system warranty on some models. So when you buy GE refrigerator today, you are buying from GE Appliances, a Haier company, made in US with global parts, with same massive service network as before and parts widely available like ice makers at 50 to 150 dollars.
