In Greek mythology, Brizo is an ancient and relatively minor goddess who was the protector of sailors, fishermen, and all mariners, and also known as the goddess of dreams and their interpretation. She was worshipped primarily on the island of Delos, one of the most sacred islands in ancient Greece, birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. According to ancient sources, Brizo was a dream oracle goddess. Sailors and fishermen would come to her temple and sleep there, practicing incubation, hoping to receive prophetic dreams about safe voyages, fishing, and navigation. She was said to interpret dreams and provide guidance for sea travel. Her name is derived from the Greek verb brizein which means to slumber or to be sleepy, reflecting her connection to sleep and dreams. Offerings to Brizo were typically small model boats, reflecting her maritime protection role, rather than animal sacrifices. She is mentioned by ancient authors including Semus of Delos. While not one of the Twelve Olympian gods like Zeus, Athena, or Aphrodite, Brizo held an important role for ordinary people who depended on the sea. In modern times, her name was chosen for the luxury faucet brand Brizo, a division of Delta Faucet Company, because of her association with water, protection, and dreams, fitting for a brand that markets itself as fashion for water and the home.
