When comparing structural strength under standard load-bearing conditions, Oriented Strand Board and CDX structural plywood are largely comparable and engineered to meet the same strict building code requirements for shear strength and stiffness. OSB often boasts uniform strength across the entire panel because of its cross-oriented wood strand matrix, whereas CDX plywood can sometimes have slight directional strength variations depending on the grain orientation of its inner wood veneer layers. Both materials perform exceptionally well for roof decking, wall sheathing, and subflooring, making selection more a matter of cost and moisture preference than raw strength.
