Rats love high-calorie foods that are rich in fat, protein, and sugar, because in the wild they seek energy-dense foods to survive and reproduce quickly. While they are omnivores and will eat almost anything, studies and pest control experience show their most loved foods include peanut butter, which is considered the number one bait due to its strong fatty and nutty aroma and sticky texture, nuts like walnuts, almonds, and hazelnuts, bacon and other cooked meats with smoky fatty smells, chocolate and hazelnut spread, and seeds and grains like sunflower seeds, oats, and cereals. They also love pet food, especially dog and cat kibble, bird seed, and garbage containing food waste. Fruits like apples, bananas, and berries, especially when overripe and slightly fermented, are also highly attractive, particularly to roof rats which are known as fruit rats. In homes, rats are often attracted to food left on counters, dirty dishes, grease on stoves, and crumbs under appliances. For baiting traps, peanut butter combined with a piece of nut or chocolate tied to the trigger is extremely effective because it is hard to steal without triggering. Understanding what rats love helps both with trapping and prevention, storing these attractive foods in airtight metal or glass containers and cleaning thoroughly makes your home much less appealing.
