Rats cannot resist foods that are high in fat, sugar, and protein because they are biologically driven to seek energy-dense foods that help them survive and reproduce quickly. The most irresistible foods according to pest control professionals and scientific studies are peanut butter, which has a strong fatty nutty aroma that travels far and a sticky texture that forces rats to work at the trap trigger, bacon and other cooked meats with smoky fatty smells, chocolate and hazelnut spread with sweet and fatty notes, nuts like walnuts, almonds, and hazelnuts, and seeds and grains like sunflower seeds and oats. They also find pet food, especially dog and cat kibble, bird seed, and garbage containing food waste extremely attractive. Fruits such as apples, bananas, grapes, and berries, especially when overripe and slightly fermented, are highly attractive, particularly to roof rats which are often called fruit rats. In homes, rats are drawn to grease on stoves, crumbs under appliances, and food left on counters. For trapping, the best combination is a small pea-sized amount of peanut butter combined with a piece of nut or dried fruit tied to the trigger so the rat must pull to get it, which ensures the trap triggers. Understanding these preferences also helps with prevention, storing these foods in airtight containers makes your home far less appealing.
