Getting rid of rats immediately is challenging because rats are cautious, intelligent, and good at hiding, but the fastest method is a combination of aggressive trapping and exclusion rather than relying on repellents. The most immediate kill comes from rat-sized snap traps, often called T-Rex traps, with powerful springs that break the neck within seconds, or electronic traps that deliver a high-voltage shock that kills in seconds. Place six to twelve traps at once along walls where you see droppings, grease rub marks, and gnawing, baited with peanut butter, bacon, or dried fruit, and set them perpendicular to the wall. Sealing entry holes larger than a quarter inch with steel wool and caulk, metal hardware cloth, and door sweeps prevents more rats from entering. Cleaning up food sources by storing all food in airtight metal or glass containers, removing pet food at night, and securing trash in sealed bins makes your home less attractive. Poisons do not work immediately and cause rats to die hidden in walls causing odor and secondary poisoning risks. Ultrasonic devices and smells like peppermint have limited immediate effect. For severe infestations, the fastest overall solution is to call a licensed pest control professional who can do a full inspection, set commercial grade traps, and proof entry points in one visit.
