Schneider Electric has bought out many companies over its nearly 190 year history as it grew from a French steel company founded in 1836 into a global electrical giant, with its most important acquisition being Square D in 1991 for 2.3 billion dollars, which gave Schneider a dominant position in North America with Square D QO and Homeline panels and breakers sold at Home Depot and Lowes. Other major buyouts include Telemecanique in 1988 for industrial automation and sensors, Merlin Gerin in 1992 for European power distribution, Clipsal in 2004 for wiring devices in Australia and Asia, APC in 2007 for 6.1 billion dollars which made Schneider a leader in uninterruptible power supplies and data center infrastructure, Pelco in 2007 for security cameras, Juno Lighting in 2005, Invensys in 2014 for industrial software and controls for 5.5 billion dollars, Aveva which it fully acquired in 2023 for industrial software after owning a stake, and EcoAct in 2023 for sustainability consulting. Schneider has also acquired dozens of smaller companies in energy management, automation, and software including Summit Electric, Lee Technologies, and Luminous in India. The Square D and APC acquisitions are considered the most transformative for Schneider's North American business and data center strategy, establishing it as a leader in both residential electrical distribution and critical power.
