Ants do not have a single place they go at night because many ant species are active both day and night, with activity patterns varying by species, temperature, and season, but generally they return to their nests or continue foraging depending on conditions. Odorous house ants, which are tiny black ants common in kitchens, are actually more active at night in many cases, foraging along trails into homes after dark seeking sweets and moisture when it is cooler and safer from predators, so at night they are often out foraging rather than sleeping, traveling between nest and food sources. Carpenter ants, larger black ants that nest in damp wood, are primarily nocturnal and do most of their foraging at night, so you may see more activity after sunset. During the day, many ants forage as well, especially when food is abundant. At night, ants that are not foraging stay inside their nests, which are located outdoors in soil under rocks, logs, mulch, or indoors in wall voids, under floors, behind baseboards, and near moisture sources like under sinks, where queens lay eggs and workers tend larvae, pupae, and food stores in protected chambers. Some ants have circadian rhythms and rest in short naps, with workers taking many one-minute naps totaling 4 to 5 hours per day scattered throughout day and night inside the nest. In cold or rainy weather, ants stay deeper inside nests. So at night, some ants are actively foraging into your house following pheromone trails, while others are resting inside nests, and you may notice more ant activity in kitchens at night because they prefer cooler, quieter times to search for food.
