Sleeping in a room with ants is generally not dangerous but can be unpleasant and in some cases cause minor health issues, depending on ant species, numbers, and personal sensitivities, so it is best to control them rather than ignore them. Odorous house ants, which are tiny black ants that form trails into kitchens and sometimes bedrooms seeking crumbs or moisture, do not bite or sting humans and are mainly a nuisance, so sleeping in a room with a few foraging ants is not considered medically bad, though they can contaminate food and crawl on surfaces. Carpenter ants, larger black ants that nest in damp wood, also do not typically bite sleeping humans unless disturbed, but their presence indicates moisture problems. However, fire ants which are reddish and aggressive can bite and sting, causing painful welts, and if they invade bedrooms they can bite sleepers, especially children, which is bad and requires immediate control. Pharaoh ants can spread bacteria in hospitals. For most people, the main issues with sleeping in a room with ants are psychological discomfort, anxiety, and potential allergic reactions in sensitive individuals if ants crawl on skin. Ants do not transmit diseases like bed bugs or mosquitoes. To make sleeping more comfortable, store food sealed, clean crumbs, seal cracks with caulk, and use gel baits containing fipronil or borax placed away from beds that workers carry back to kill the colony. If you have fire ants or large numbers in the bedroom, contact pest control. For occasional odorous house ants, it is not severely bad to sleep in the room while treating, but control is recommended for hygiene.
